What happened

  • Ola Electric Mobility's board approved a rights issue of partly paid-up equity shares of up to ₹1,000 crore, subject to regulatory approvals.
  • The company set up a rights issue committee. The issue price, entitlement ratio and record date will be announced later.
  • Business Standard reported that the money is meant for debt repayment and for scaling up the company's battery cell business, and that the promoter group, which holds about 33%, is expected to take up its share.

Why it matters

In a rights issue, every existing shareholder can buy new shares in proportion to what they already hold, usually at a discount to the market price. Shareholders who do not take up their rights see their percentage holding fall.

Good to know: Partly paid-up shares let investors pay part of the issue price now and the rest in later instalments, called calls.
