What happened

  • NMDC commissioned an integrated iron ore project costing ₹5,427 crore on 27 September 2026, according to a press release it filed with the NSE.
  • The project has three parts: a new iron ore processing plant at Bacheli, a 135 km slurry pipeline from Bacheli to Nagarnar with a capacity of 15 million tonnes a year, and a pellet plant at Nagarnar with a capacity of 2 million tonnes a year.
  • The company says the pipeline passes through 61 villages in the Bastar and Dantewada districts.
  • Chairman and Managing Director Amitava Mukherjee and senior officials followed the commissioning live from NMDC's head office.

Why it matters

NMDC is India's largest iron ore miner. It says the new plants let it turn low-grade iron ore fines and slimes into concentrate and pellets, move ore by pipeline instead of by road, and add a higher-value product to what it sells. The company links the project to its long-term aim of raising iron ore capacity to 100 million tonnes a year.

Good to know: Pellets are small balls made from fine iron ore that steel plants feed into blast furnaces. A slurry pipeline carries ore mixed with water, so less of it has to travel by truck or train.
